Britain could find itself out in the cold of the EU front if Theresa May doesn’t accept an ‘off-the-shelf’ trade off, a leading Eurocrat warned.
Guy Verhofstadt threatened the PM, saying she can’t win a bespoke deal which would benefit only Britain.
He said that if Ms May takes an independent stance the EU could cut its economy off from trade with the
Verhofstadt said on BBC’s Andrew Marr Show: “It’s your decision. But (as yet) the British government has not agreed to the freedom of movement of people”.
“The second best option is a customs union. But Britain says no, that’s not possible because it wants control of trade policy”.
“I said look at one or the other of the association arrangements. Maybe that will also be opposed…”
“A lot depends, not on the Europe side (but) on the red lines put on the table by the British.”
He said there is no chance of a new deal on trade and security with Britain setting its own internal rules.
The Belgian Eurocrat added that if Ms May turns down an off-the-shelf deal there will be easy Brexit exit on March 29.
Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel was more compliant. She has appealed for an agreement with Britain which recognizes a ‘unique’ relationship permitting the UK to ignore some EU laws.
But Verhofstadt remained adamant saying instead there must be an “annex” inside the withdrawal agreement during the transitional period with the current rules remaining in place.
The British PM had earlier ruled this out demanding a new trade agreement must be thrashed out to permit the UK to forge new trade deals with the rest of the world.
The EU spokesman threatened that if May’MPs VETO a final agreement it could lead to another general election with a Government under Labour’s Jeremy Corbyn.
Guy Verhofstadt is an ultra-Europhile who wants the EU to remain in control rather than any individual nation state.
