Russia Vetoed a UN Security Council sponsored resolution to condemn Iran for its violations of international sanctions
The VETO signals that Russia will oppose US hegemony on principle – and more.
Effectively, Russia has shot down Western attempt to isolate Iran geopolitically.
The Russian stance took exception to the British-drafted text containing a condemnation of Iran.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reportedly said ‘that “it is necessary to fully implement the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action…this should be done with Iran’s voluntary participation and on the basis of consensus”.
Strangely, considering the differences between Saudi Arabia and Iran, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir is said to have called Lavrov just hours before the Security Council vote on the drafting of a UN Security Council resolution on Yemen.
What Russia seems to have understood and the US not at all so, is that the specious split between Sunni Turkey and Saudi Arabia on the one hand, and Shiite Iran and Syria on the other, is purely transitory.
In short, the proxies fighting for the two great powers are all resolute Muslims who will be found standing shoulder to shoulder at prayer during the Hajj pilgrimage before the year’s end.
The salient question then, is does the US plan to unleash a reign of terror in the Middle East and North Africa, with Israel in the vanguard, after Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu boasted of his country’s military might during his recent visit to the United States?
