On Trump’s withdrawal from the Iran deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), sanctions loom. But Iran will not to budge so long as the EU stands by the agreement.
Iran is aware that Britain is more or less out of the picture with Brexit, but hopes that France and Germany will now lead other EU member states in the direction of independent foreign policy perspectives.
That may well come to fruition if Tehran looks towards conducting future trade transaction in the Euro and Yuan in place of the US dollar.
This would be radical change (the one that got Sadam Hussein and Iraq into mindless carnage) but Iran is prepared to take up this challenge.
Iran says “people want change” and refers to Brexit, Catalonia, and Greece, as wanting “change in classic political divisions” with the US out of the picture, but for it being the world’s largest market.
That’s could be the sticking point as Europe has $450 billion a year business with the US, and only $30 billion with Iran. But Tehran remains firm in its resolve saying “we know how to defend ourselves” as it reminded of Iran’s massive reserves of oil and gas – and its capacity to block the Persian Gulf should it come down to a show of force.
“The Americans are not capable of conquering Iran” if the sanctions fail to have the desired affect, a ranking Iranian official said, alluding to the alliances Tehran has in the Middle East with Hezbollah and “sympathizers in Pakistan, Afghanistan, India and Turkey.” Iran is also confident of Iraq’s support “We know who the next Prime Minister will be” he reportedly added.
On American failures he is quoted to have said, “For four decades they have tried in vain to install a security system in the Middle East” and failed, while in relying on Israel, Iranian intelligence monitoring showed financial movements to European accounts to indicate Israelis may be getting ready to leave in case of a land war.
In short, Iran appears of the firm opinion that while the US may win some battles, they will never win the war sanctions notwithstanding. And, they could lose the US dollar as a commercial currency in the process, if they follow the path they appear bent on pursuing.
